CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RST.11-12.4 Determine the meaning of symbols, key terms, and other domain-specific words and phrases as they are used in a specific scientific or technical context relevant to grades 11–12 texts and topics.
Objective- You will be able to identify the parts of Sonata form and be able show in a piece of music where the different parts occur.
Introduction- I will use the digital story to introduce you to the parts of Sonata form. http://youtu.be/FZbXDDvYw1Q
Model- I will project a piece of music onto the board and walk you through the steps to find the different parts of Sonata form in a piece of music and what they are called. For instance, the last section of Sonata form is called the Recapitulation. It is made up of the roots “re” and “capit,” which mean “back, again” and “head,” respectively. This means that the head, or beginning, material comes back again near the end of the piece or movement.
Guided Practice- You will get into groups of three and, with a different piece of music, find the different parts of Sonata form in the piece. Then, we will get back together and discuss as a class why the parts are where they are in the music.
Independent Practice- You will take home a piece of music and identify the parts of Sonata form in the piece.
Assessment- At the end of the unit, I will give you an unfamiliar piece of music and you will identify and label the different parts of Sonata form for an assessment.
