CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RST.11-12.4 Determine the meaning of symbols, key terms, and other domain-specific words and phrases as they are used in a specific scientific or technical context relevant to grades 11–12 texts and topics.
Objective: You will be able to determine the meaning of musical vocabulary words by using root words, prefixes and affixes.
Introduction: I will play the following video about Sonata form, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FZbXDDvYw1Q
Model: I will select a few musical terms and, using root words, prefixes and affixes, break down the words and determine their meaning as an example for the class.
Guided Practice: Together with you, we will take a few musical terms and determine their meanings using root words, prefixes and affixes.
Independent Practice: I will break you into groups of 3 or 4 students. Each group will have five musical terms to break down and determine their meanings. You will share their findings with class once all the groups have finished.
Assessment: You will take home an assignment where you will take seven musical terms and break them down into their root words, prefixes and affixes and then determine their meaning. Also, you will choose three words on your own that interest you to break down and determine their meaning. After that, you will reflect on how root words, prefixes and affixes helped you determine the meaning of those words
