View the Digital Story HERE
Objective: After you have completed the lesson, you will be able to understand the basic structure of Sonata form.
Introduction: I would start by asking what you think would happen if the human body did not have a skeleton. I will then explain that music, just like the body, needs structure to support itself and function. This way, you can relate something you do not know to something you do know.
Model: I will draw a chart on the board with the different sections of Sonata form and the structure of the form. I will then show you the vocabulary digital story, so that you can associate the words with their definitions and functions using the story.
Guided Practice: I would then break you into small groups and give each group three pieces of music. You would have to find where in the piece the Exposition, Development and Recapitulation begin and end, as well as where the modulation in the Exposition is. After, you will present your findings to the class and I will guide you towards the correct locations if you have not already found them.
Independent Practice: For homework, I will assign you a piece to analyze like you did in the guided practice, only this time by yourselves at home. I will assign similar assignments over the course of a few nights as we go more in depth into Sonata form.
Assessment: During class, I will give out two pieces of music for the students to analyze. You will work independently and have the entire class period to analyze the two pieces. I will then grade them and hand them back and then we will review as a class after the test to ensure understanding.
